Founded in the 11th century and raised to the rank of imperial capital by Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), Meknes is one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Its monumental heritage — ramparts, palaces, granaries, basins and gates — bears witness to the height of the Alaouite dynasty.
An Exceptional Heritage
Inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1996, the medina of Meknes holds monuments of exceptional richness: Bab Mansour el Aleuj, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the Granaries and the Souani Basin, the Qara Prison and the Dar Kebira Palace.
A Heritage Under Rehabilitation
Meknes benefits from a vast programme to rehabilitate its medina, monuments and public spaces. Led by the authorities and local stakeholders, it aims to restore the living function of this heritage and turn it into a driver of tourism appeal.
